BIERZO MENU - WINE, GOLD AND THE ROAD
Halfway between Galicia and León, El Bierzo is a rarity in the northwest of the peninsula. Most of this region is located in the Sil river basin, and is delimited by the Ancares and Montes Aquilianos mountains to the north, the León mountains to the south, and the Sierras da Enciña, La Lastra and O Courel to the south. west.
It is a wine region that has gained great importance in recent years due to the quality of its wines, especially red wines made from Mencía grapes, although white and rosé wines are also produced. The vineyards are cultivated on slopes and terraces, on slate and quartzite soils, and the region’s wineries have adopted modern techniques to make their wines, although they also maintain centuries-old traditions. In addition to wine, the Bierzo region is known for its gastronomy, with typical dishes such as botillo (a sausage made from meat and pork bones), battalion empanada (stuffed with meat and pepper), cocido berciano, chestnuts and cherries from the region
El Bierzo is also a region with a rich history dating back to Roman times. The first mining settlements in the area where gold and other precious metals were exploited were established here, highlighting above all the area of Las Médulas, a World Heritage Roman gold mine.
During the Middle Ages, El Bierzo became an important agricultural and livestock region, and was disputed by the Christian and Muslim kingdoms. In the 12th century, the Templars built the castle of Ponferrada, which became an important strategic center in the fight against the Muslims.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the region experienced significant economic growth thanks to the production of wine and the exploitation of coal mining. Today, El Bierzo is a thriving wine region that attracts tourists from all over the world for its rich history, culture and gastronomy.
